    Abstract: The career of Henry G. J. Moseley is outlined. The process by which he found the relationship between the atomic number and the frequency of radiation, and his research on X-rays are recounted. Moseley concluded that the atomic number is the essential characteristic of the element. His great contribution left a profound mark in the history of atomic physics.
