Abstract: Low dimensional and mesoscopic systems represent a major field of condensed matter physics. We first review some fundamental concepts and principles in mesoscopic physics, then describe recent progress in the study of quantum dots, two－dimensional gases, and electronic correlations in such systems. Some open questions are also pointed out.
